Franchise Fees
Cable companies operate within the public right-of-way and have a Franchise
Agreement with either
the city or county of the area they are providing cable TV service to. This
agreement governs cable
company operations and requires the cable operator to pay a percentage of its
gross revenues to
the city or county as a franchise fee. This fee covers the cable company's right
to utilize the public's
right-of-way for placement of cable company lines and facilities. Under federal
law, cable companies
are permitted to pass this fee on to cable subscribers.
Regulatory Fee
In 1993 Congress began requiring the FCC to annually recover the regulatory
costs associated with
the Commission's enforcement, policy and rulemaking, user information, and
international activities.
For HunTel CableVision customers, this charge is 6¢ per month. |
