Multiple Computers and Networking

Connecting more than one computer with a DSL or Cable Modem
The modem has only one Ethernet port, so you will have to purchase a hub or switch to gain extra Ethernet ports.  You would connect one Ethernet cable from your modem to the hub/switch then connect additional Ethernet cables to each computer.  Hubs, Switches, and Ethernet cables can be purchased at ABB or most computer stores.  ABB can also make custom cables to meet any length that you would need.

Using wireless instead of Ethernet
You would have to purchase a Wireless Access Point and Wireless Adapters for your computers.  A Wireless Access Point has an Ethernet port that connects to the modem.  It then shares the high-speed connection with any computer that has a compatible wireless card.  There are three ways to add wireless to your computer. 

• PCI Card: would need installed into your desktop computer

• USB Adapter: would plug into an open USB port on your computer

• PCMCIA card: used for laptops.

Install Network Installation
ABB has the expertise to install network devices that you need at your home or business.  We sell and install wired or wireless network equipment.  We would be happy to provide you a quote on any networking project.

Installation is billed by the hour at a charge of $75.  We will also charge for driving time.  All labor and materials are billed at the completion of the project.

Network Routers are used to connect multiple computers to a high-speed Internet modem.  Routers are used when the high-speed modem is configured as a bridge.  Cable modems are usually bridges and some DSL modems can be bridges.

Wireless Routers and Access Points

Wireless routers are used to make your high-speed Internet connection available to computers that have wireless adapters.  A wireless router would be used with cable modems or with DSL modems that are configured as bridges.  A wireless access point will also share your high-speed Internet connection to wireless ready computers.  Wireless access points should be used behind DSL modems that are configured as routers.
